The Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa replaces the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa. The SID allows most visa holders to stay in Australia for up to 4 years. This visa referred to as the SID visa is a provisional visa for skilled overseas workers to work for an approved sponsor/employer where employers can't source an appropriately skilled Australian worker. SID visa holders have a clear pathway to permanent residence.
If you want to apply from Australia, you must hold a substantive visa or a subclass 010 Bridging A visa, a subclass 020 Bridging B visa or a subclass 030 Bridging C visa.
There are three streams under this visa subclass:
- Core Skills stream,
- Specialist Skills stream
- Labour Agreement stream
Benefits to SID visa holders:
- Have a pathway to permanent residence.
- Any work with an approved employer counts towards permanent residence.
- Only one year of work experience is required in the nominated occupation or related field
- have the same English language requirement for all three streams (IELTS Overall band score of at least 5.0 with at least 5 in each band, or equivalent score in other eligible English test), unless exempt.
Common Eligibility requirements for all three stream:
- There is no age requirement for this visa.
- Be nominated for a position by an approved sponsor
- Must have a positive skills assessment for a nominated occupation (where a mandatory skills assessment is required)
- Meet English language requirements (unless exempt).
- Meet health and character requirements.
- Meet specific requirements of the stream in which you apply.
- Have at least 1 year of full-time work experience in your nominated occupation within the last 5 years.
- Work carried out on a part-time or casual basis must be equivalent to at least 12 months full-time work. The period of work does not need to be continuous.
- Other ways you may be able to demonstrate your work experience could include where you have gained your experience:
- as part of a Masters and/or PhD - for relevant occupations, such as medical and research occupations
- while studying through a formal arrangement such as a clinical or industry placement, internship or apprenticeship
- Other ways you may be able to demonstrate your work experience could include where you have gained your experience:
- Work carried out on a part-time or casual basis must be equivalent to at least 12 months full-time work. The period of work does not need to be continuous.
Core Skills Stream:
You can apply on this stream if your occupation is on the Core Skills Occupation List. with a salary of at least or above the new Core Skills Income Threshold of AUD73,150.
On this visa, you can live and work for your sponsor in Australia for up to 4 years and Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years. If eligible, you may apply for permanent residence in Australia.
Specialist Skills stream:
You can apply on this stream if your occupation is on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) occupation listed in Major Groups 1,2,4,5 or 6 with a salary of at least the Specialist Skills Income Threshold of AUD135,000 and no less than Australian workers in the same occupation.
On this visa, you can live and work for your sponsor in Australia for up to 4 years and Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years. If eligible, you may apply for permanent residence in Australia.
Labour Agreement stream:
You can apply on this stream if your employer has a Labour Agreement with the Commonwealth. Find more details about the labour agreement under which you will be working from the link provided.
On this visa, you can live and work for your sponsor in Australia for up to 4 years and Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years. If eligible, you may apply for permanent residence in Australia.
Include family:
You can include members of the family unit with your visa application at the time of your application, before application decision has been made or as subsequent entrant after you have granted the visa. There is no age requirement for this visa
Your employer must agree (or have agreed) in writing to include the applicants as a family member in the nomination.
If the family members are in Australia, they must hold a substantive visa or on a Bridging visa A, Bridging visa B or Bridging visa C. They might not be eligible for this visa if they have had a visa cancelled or refused while they were in Australia.
All family members who apply for the visa must meet the Health and Character Requirements of the Australian Government.
